The Bachelor of Science Degree in Media Arts, area of study Web Design and Development prepares students for a career in web development and design field.
This program is structured to compliment the revolutionary changes in interactive design that have catapulted the primarily print media area of graphic design into new arenas that combine audio, video, text, graphics, animation and commerce for the web world.
The program starts with the overview of the digital media field with introductory courses in web design (HTML/CSS), animation (Maya) and digital video editing (FinalCut Pro®) offering the video students full understanding of a platform in digital media field.
Students completing the program will have acquired knowledge as web designers and web developers. Their skills will include designing a functional website for multiple devices, scripting, programming, Search Engine Optimization, dynamic content, social networking and usability.
Students must complete all course requirements for the Associate of Applied Science Degree: Graphic Design as well as Introduction to Multimedia courses of Term Four. In the second academic year, the students will specifically concentrate on disciplines of Web Design and Advanced Web Design. As is the case with the Associate Degree programs, a student is required to take 4 credits in each of four disciplines: Art, Mathematics / Science, Social Sciences / Humanities, and English / Language. Students may select from the below offerings. In no case, may the same credit be used for the Associate and the Bachelor of Science Degree. In addition, students will be enrolled in IPP200, Independent Portfolio Project (digital).
The program prepares students for entry-level positions such as web graphic designer, web developer, and webmaster with knowledge of digital video editing and basics of 3D skills.

Upon successful completion of all Associate of Applied Science Degree requirements, Terms 4 - 6, the required General Education Courses and portfolio, students will have completed 122 semester credit hours (2340 hours of instruction) and will be issued a Bachelor of Science Degree: Media Arts.
The program starts with an overview of the digital media field with introductory courses in web design (HTML/CSS) and animation (Maya®) enabling the students to gain a full understanding of a platform in the digital media field.
In this program, students will learn how to apply their knowledge to the creation of effective and efficient animated web sites. In doing so, students will incorporate interactive digital media elements, web programming techniques, and web animation while applying design principles and aesthetics. The method of instruction will be a combination of lecture, guided exercises and application of skills to the complete projects.
Specialized Web Design Program prepares students for entry-level positions as: web graphic designer, web interface designer and developer with basic video editing and basic 3D skills.
Upon successful completion of Term 4 and Term 5, Specialized Web Design, a student will have completed 30 semester credit hours (600 hours of instruction) and will be issued a Diploma: Specialized Web Design.
Students completing the Diploma: Specialized Advanced Web Design will have acquired knowledge as web designers and web developers. Their skills will include designing a functional website for multiple devices, scripting, programming, Search Engine Optimization, dynamic content, social networking and usability.

The method of instruction will be a combination of lecture, guided exercises and application of skills to complete projects. The program starts with overview of a multimedia field with introductory courses in video production (editing in FinalCut Pro®) and animation design (Maya®) enabling the web design students to gain a full understanding of a platform in the digital media field.
The Specialized Advanced Web Design program prepares students for positions such as web graphic designer, web developer, and webmaster with additional knowledge of digital video editing and basics of 3D skills.
Upon successful completion of Term 4 - 6, Specialized Advanced Web students will have completed 45 semester credit hours (900 hours of instruction) and will be issued a Diploma: Specialized Advanced Web.
Platt College San Diego’s Professional Development Courses (PD) is designed for, but not limited to, professionals seeking to learn software, scripting or concepts that will enhance their knowledge in the Digital Media Design field.

All courses require pre-requisite skills and will be interviewed and assessed by the as- signed instructor to make sure the student meets all of the prerequisites for the course, as well as to determine if the course will meet the expectations of the “PD stu- dent.” Please see designated course page for exact requirements.
Cash (Check, Credit Card, or Money Order also accepted) payment is due before enter- ing course. If course is not paid in full before course begins the “PD student” will be dropped from the course.
The “PD Student” will receive a certification of completion upon request. College credit, grade, transcript, diploma or an academic degree will not be issued.
The “PD student” will NOT receive an academic grade for course(s).
Regular attendance is expected of the student. More than a 20% absense rate in a course will result in the “PD student” being dropped from the course. Nevertheless, the instructors have the prerogative to permit less than the above stated number of ab- sences based on the specific requirements of the course.

An enrolled “PD student” can withdraw from the course without any penalty. The “PD student” will receive a full refund of any money paid if canceled prior to course begin- ning date or within the first seven days of enrollment. "Day" is defined as a calendar day.
Cancellation occurs when a “PD student” gives a written notice to the registrar of Platt College San Diego.

E-commerce Web Site Developers focus on the commercial application of a website; how will it be used to generate business and conduct transactions. E-commerce web designers and developers should be highly skilled in creating transaction-oriented web sites, online catalogs, shopping cart software, web site search capabilities, and forms. A strong knowledge of HTML, familiarity with Dreamweaver, and solid project management skills are essential, while knowledge of ASP, Cold Fusion, or Microsoft SQL Server is often also required.

Game designers use graphic design, animation, and coding techniques to bring interactive games to life. They are often required to have strong leadership and communications skills as well as a great sense of what makes a game fun to play. They may be asked to design, program, document, tune, and balance games. Software skill requirements may vary depending on the job, but talent and experience for hip game trends is a universal necessity.
Interactive Production Artists bring the flat designs of the Art Director to life, re-creating them using Flash, Director and web programming languages such as dynamic HTML and Flash ActionScript. Expert knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, as well as familiarity with file optimization and compression techniques, is often required. Interactive Production Artists have an important job. They are usually the people implementing the animation that powers intros, banners, menus, games, and buttons.
Handles compositing, design, and animation of various types of media content for advertising productions, including TV commercials, movie titles, and Flash content.
A Motion Graphics Designer creates animated artwork for a variety of mediums: the internet, television, and movie are a few. Motion Graphics can be seen in commercials, web movie clips, stand-alone presentations, trailers, intros, and post production work for television and movies. An accessible online Reel of edited motion graphics work and /or professional Flash movie clips is usually required. Photoshop is one of the best applications to master if you want to excel as a Motion Graphics Designer. Other applications such as Flash, After Effects, Adobe Premier, Final Cut Pro and sometimes Avid training is required.
Multimedia Designers often work as part of a team to create rich web sites, CD-Roms, DVDs or exhibition materials. Regardless of the medium they work in, they should be familiar with a variety of story telling tools, such as graphics, sound, video and animation. Some Multimedia Designer positions include creating interactive learning modules, games, advertising campaigns, marketing materials, online communities and intranet systems. Strong creative skills combined with extensive knowledge of design software and programming languages such as ActionScript and dynamic (D) HTML are essential.
New media specialists often create graphic effects that enrich multimedia products, including narration, 3D animation, sound effects and progress reporting. Expert knowledge in Photoshop, Illustrator, PowerPoint, Flash and Dreamweaver is usually required. An ability to produce for various media channels such as web, print, and multimedia is beneficial. New Media Specialists should also have a great understanding of html, dynamic html, and Actionscript.
Production Artists must be highly organized and able to work efficiently on multiple projects to meet tight deadlines. They need to implement quick revisions to match a client’s, Art Director’s or Senior Designer’s requests. Print-oriented Production Artists are often required to have software training in QuarkXPress, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop. Experience proofing, preflighting, preparing and press checking files are also extremely beneficial for print Production Artists. Multimedia and Web savvy Production Artists should have extensive knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, Image Ready and Flash. They should be familiar with image compression, file correction, and optimization techniques.
