About Fabio Sasso
began as designer in 1995-96. He obtained his degree in graphic design and continued to work professionally since 1998 in Brazil. He and his friend, Fabiano Meneghetti, currently run a small web design studio named Zee. In December of 2006, he began his blog, (Abduzeedo), a design blog that draws in more than a hundred thousand design enthusiasts a day and almost three million a month. Platt Blog also had the chance to get a quick chat session with Fabio himself…

An Interview with Fabio Sasso

Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to speak with us at Platt Blog. So let us we start out simple and maybe if you can give us a rundown about what is it like being Fabio Sasso and where did everything start?

First off I would like to thank you for the opportunity to do this interview and Platt College for inviting me to visit the college and talk to the students, I am stoked!

To your question, I am just a regular Brazilian guy who loves design; I have always been like that. However, since the end of 2006 when I started Abduzeedo, I decided that I would share pretty much everything I know and learn when it comes to design. That decision has changed my life.

What drives you to do what you do?

Since I can remember, like when I was kid, I was always drawing and creating things, then when I got my first computer I fell in love, especially when I discovered Photoshop and other graphic applications. That passion is what drives me to do what I do, there are always new things to learn and evolve as a professional and human being, and with the Internet this process has become much easier so we can exchange information with people from all over the world.

Have you ever run into a “muse” block, sort of like a “writers block”?

Yeah, that is part of our lives as creators right, however I believe most of the times that we have this “writers block” is because we do not have enough information about what we have to do.

In your opinion, what do you think are the important fundamentals of being a great designer?

A great designer in my opinion is the one that understands that we are designing something with a target audience in mind and not to other designers or ourselves, we are not artists in this matter, we do not express ourselves in our designs. We are simply the middleman between the client and the consumer, and our goal is to make the communication between them as clear and efficient as possible.

Your blog “Abduzeedo” is truly remarkable site, what this something you were hoping to achieve?

I have never thought that Abduzeedo would grow or get popular, that is the reality. My only goal was to share things that inspire me and also things that I learn along the way. I believe that is why the blog grew so much. The goal was never to be big but to be useful at least to myself.

If I was a student trying to get into graphic design, what is the one piece of advice you would offer that would not forget?

Keep learning and practicing doing personal work to evolve, however the most important advice I could give is that you must share your work and knowledge. Make sure you put yourself out there using services like Flickr, Behance, Deviantart, Dribbble and others, that is the easiest way to get into graphic design and to promote yourself.

You are stuck on an island, name five things you would take with you?

- A tent

- Matches to make fire. I saw in Man vs. Wild that it is super hard to do that with sticks

- Sketchbook/pencils

- The knife Rambo had in Rambo 1, 2 and 3

- A super hot girl
