TikTok is one of the leading social media platforms in 2020 due to its original content, clever use of trends, and a high chance of visibility. Many songs have gone viral due to dance challenges, humor challenges, and unique montages. What has also increased is the visibility of artists. Whether you are a graphic designer, web designer, digital illustrator, 3D modeler, or video editor, you can get your art and knowledge in front of the right audience through Tik Tok with these tips and trends we observed in the community.
MUST DO BEFORE POSTING ON TIKTOK
While TikTok is a platform that encourages being experimental with your style, here are some things you want to implement to get more viewers to see your TikTok.
- Use trending hashtags (which can be found on your Discover page)
- Hashtag #fyp so it can show up on others For Your Page.
- User other relevant hashtags.
- Attach a trending song to your video.
1) Do a timelapse process video.
Because TikTok is about being ‘real’ and ‘unfiltered,’ users love the kind of videos that showcase a process. Many artists record how they create an art piece from start to finish. Platt College San Diego’s Digital Video Production student Jocelyn Rhyder (@jocelyn_rhyder) does this well by showcasing her art while using a trending song!

@snoyadraws 3D model created a TikTok to shows the process of creating Lara Jean’s room from To All Boys I Loved Before.

2) Share a story on how you created your art!
Secondly, TikTok is a great platform to share a story in the quickest way possible. Our Platt College San Diego’s Web Design & Development graduate Lucy Knowles (@lucky_k_art), is excellent for using this tip. Here is a story where she shares how she designed her friend’s surfboard.
@lucy_k_artFirst surfboard painting! Be nice I know she’s a little rough but I love her???? #surfboardart #surfboard #pinup #americanatattoos #tattoogirl♬ Bombshell – Death Lens
3) Share some daily life as an artist!
The third tip is to share day-to-day life as an artist or creative professional. Many users love videos where one can get a glance at someone’s life. Tiktok user @miyaguart gives users a tour of her in-home studio space shared with her husband below.

TikTok user @thedigitalsocialclub showcases various essentials she uses as a Graphic Designer below.

4) Participate in challenges.
The fourth tip is to participate in TikTok challenges! There are many challenges out there, and digital artists love to do their own take on it and sometimes even creating their own challenge! TikTok user @earjelly started a challenge by designing a poster every day based on a song lyric. Using popular songs, followers get excited about each video and even give suggestions of other songs and artists they would like @earjelly to design.

5) Sharing how-to and tips.
Our fifth tip is to create how-to and tutorial videos. Using your TikTok to share quick and fun tips with others is an excellent way to become a valuable and knowledgeable resource to the community. TikTok user @thedesignguy focuses on using his platform to share many graphic design tips such as portfolio tips, top 5 font combos, and many more. The TikTok we shared below is a tip on how he starts his graphic design proposals with his clients.

6) Be humorous and have fun!
Lastly, have fun and be humorous! TikTok is all about being candid and authentic. Gone are the days where you have to carefully curate the perfect video. Many users love to share funny stories, memes, and relatable things that everyone goes through. The same can be said for daily things that creative professionals can go through as well! TikTok user @daap_code shares a humorous video of trends that impress non-graphic designers, beginner graphic designers, and expert graphic designers.

TikTok user Camilo Castaneda (@camicees) shares his life as a professional video editor, but the humorous part is the struggles that every video editor has unfortunately experienced before.
